North County band Taken by Canadians are about to release their album Here’s to Returning All the Tragedy We Saw and were kind enough to let me have an early listen. The track “The Tragedy,” from which the album title is derived, got my attention immediately and I found myself humming it long after listening. With a little coaxing they’re letting me share the track with all you wonderful San Diego music fans… so get to listening:
The song opens with a delicate melody and drum beat that builds up quickly to a toe-tapping pace. One of my favorite aspects is the way Anna Zinova’s bright violin notes juxtapose with singer Ben Ambrosini’s gritty vocals. The style is accessible in a way common to contemporary folk-pop bands, but with strong musicianship and rock infusion that give it an authentically raw feeling. This tune in particular reminds me of The Hold Steady – in a good way.
Taken by Canadians will celebrate the release of their new album on May 30 at Silver Cloud Lounge in Oceanside with support from Jimmy Ruelas and DJ Lexicon Devil. The show kicks off at 9 p.m. and there is a suggested $5 donation at the door. Plus you should bring some extra cash to pick up the record and maybe a tshirt (and maybe an extra tshirt for me).
