22 Day Song Challenge – Day 11: A Song That Describes You

If you need to catch up on what it is we’re doing here check out the post from Day 1 and meet our panel of rad here. Or click on their names below to see their band page or stalk them on social media. They like that.

Feel free to answer each prompt for yourself in the comments below. We love to hear about as many genres and bands as we can all around town. The only rule is you must use San Diego musicians/bands. To make it extra challenging try not to repeat a band as the days go by. If you want a look at the full list drop me a line. And you can view previous days and compare your answers here.

P.S. Lots of our picks are up for the 2013 San Diego Music Awards so don’t forget to vote for your favorites!

Here we go:

Day 11 – A Song That Describes You

Jen VT: “Give ‘Em Hell” by Little Hurricane* – This song reminds me of the lavender onesie my dad bought me as an infant. It said “Born to Raise Hell” across it. Now you see where I get it from, huh? I love the back and forth sing-song of this one and the quick-paced lines that CC delivers. The ending sums up what I get up every day trying to do-  “When your heart beat’s lonely, and you can’t see the sun, give em hell, give em hell, give em hell, give em hell.”

Natalie Watson Webber: “Friends of the Friendless” by The Touchies*- I identify with this ENTIRE record from the cover art (just replace the cat for my beagle, Mr. Darcy!) to the sentiments and life experiences in nearly every track!  I ❤ “Friends of the Friendless” as a record, but the title track “Friends of the Friendless” speaks to me in a very personal way.  It’s super positive, which is a trait I aspire to be more “Touchie-like”.  Transitioning into Verse 2 that describes me to a “T”: “When someone’s sad I think about them/ When someone’s rad I dream about them/Cause life’s too short I wanna spend it with you/Because of all the things you say (and do!)/And I will live my dreams/And I will make my scene/Cause we’re the friends of the friendless/Coming to you/ We’ll never judge the things you say and do/Friends of the friendless forevermore we’ll never show you out that door” I like to think of myself as “The-Girl-Next-Door” approachable and super nice, I’ve got a lot of heart (which usually comes out & on to my sleeve way too fast, but we’ve all got our faults).  Having had to move around a bit I also try and bloom where I’m planted so I can super relate to the line “And I will live my dreams/And I will make my scene”.  Just the title of the song “Friend of the Friendless” speaks volumes to me about compassion another trait that The Touchies have in spades,-seriously. If that wasn’t enough reason to love this song at 1:20 there’s a nod to The Go Go’s when you hear Mishey cry “Can you hear them?” from “Our Lips Are Sealed”.  #Radness

Rick Ostop: Leucadia Love Song” by Darius Degher* – If I have to pick one song, this one explains how I felt the first time I pulled into Leucadia after spending four years on the road traveling the country in an RV selling my art. I needed a soft place to land after all of that traveling and this beach town saved me. Since then, it’s continued to bring my wife and me countless good times. Darius’ lyrics and the slow pace of his song sum up where I’m at at this point in my life.

Andrea Moore: “Cold Bitch’s Heart” by Blackout Party* – The first time I heard this song I assumed it was about me. I’ve been called a cold bitch a few times, so I assumed Blackout Party had gotten wind of it.

Paul Moffat“Haunted Heart” – Little Hurricane* –  I love how the lyrics play both sides of a relationship – how it’s not just about being the calm to the wild – but how you also can be the wild to the calm.  One person is not always the yin to the other’s yang.  In a strong relationship, you understand when to be which.

Ryan Miller: “Tah’s Theme” by In Motion Collective*.

Eric Blocker“Man of Tin” Uniform Victor – It was bound to happen sooner or later. I’m proud of this one. This is my band. This is my song. Welcome to a small window inside my head.

About Jen Van Tieghem

There aren’t many things I love more than music. While life spins away at a rapid beat I’ve realized it’s important to spend it doing what I love – enjoying music in San Diego. I have a handful of favorite venues, a heart full of favorite bands, and decided to write about it.
