22 Day Song Challenge – Day 7: A Song That You Can Dance To

If you need to catch up on what it is we’re doing here check out the post from Day 1 and meet our panel of rad here. Or click on their names below to see their band page or stalk them on social media. They like that.

Feel free to answer each prompt for yourself in the comments below. We love to hear about as many genres and bands as we can all around town. The only rule is you must use San Diego musicians/bands. To make it extra challenging try not to repeat a band as the days go by. If you want a look at the full list drop me a line. And you can view previous days and compare your answers here.

P.S. Lots of our picks are up for the 2013 San Diego Music Awards so don’t forget to vote for your favorites!

Here we go:

Day 7 – A Song That You Can Dance To

Jen VT: “Sanctified Strut” by The Styletones* – If you can’t dance to The Styletones you should probably see a doctor. This large ensemble of musicians give crazy fun live performances, hence their SDMA nod for “Best Live Band.” This quick toe-tapping tune has long been one of my favorites of theirs. Singer Stevie Harris blends funk and soul in his vocals and his energetic performances on stage command a riotous dance party.

Natalie Watson Webber“All Day and Night” by Shake Before Us – Go to any Shake Before Us show and I defy you not to dance,-even if it’s “not your thing”.  It. Is. Impossible.  Play their video – just don’t blame me for the consequences in your cubicle.

Rick Ostop: “All Day and Night” by Shake Before Us – I definitely won’t ever be pegged as someone who cuts much of a rug at a show. I am guilty, however, of some head bobbing and maybe a slight shimmy to this Shake Before Us song.

Paul Milichik: “All Day and Night” by Shake Before Us.

Andrea Moore: “Next to Know” by The Heavy Guilt*. If you aren’t dancing to this song, then I can’t trust you.

Paul Moffat“Tear Down Your Idols” – The New Kinetics.  I doesn’t make me dance so much as convulse rhythmically.  The intro drumbeat with the cowbell doesn’t really foreshadow the bombast to come, but when the guitar and bass drop that riff, that’s it.  I’m flailing all over the place.  I love the dual lead vocals.  I love the bridge.  I had the honor to play this song on stage with Birdy and Brian, and got to flail around with them.

Ryan Miller: “Plant Vibes” by Pocket*.

Eric Blocker“Do You Wanna Dance?” by The Creepy Creeps*

*Indicates San Diego Music Awards nominees. Vote here.

About Jen Van Tieghem

There aren’t many things I love more than music. While life spins away at a rapid beat I’ve realized it’s important to spend it doing what I love – enjoying music in San Diego. I have a handful of favorite venues, a heart full of favorite bands, and decided to write about it.
