Over a year ago I caught Saint Motel here in San Diego, and it seems they’ve been blowing up like woah ever since. In the last year or so they put out their first full-length album, Voyeur, toured like mad men (including return visits to town), and put out an infectious video for their single “Benny Goodman” (directed by frontman, AJ Jackson, no less.) Their music is a charming blend of unapologetic pop that plays well with brazen horn and delicate piano interludes. Along with Jackson the L.A. band consists of Aaron Sharp (AKA A Sharp – lead guitar), Dak (bass), and Greg Erwin (drums).
Saint Motel’s current tour began overseas in the UK, a first for the band which Jackson describes as “a pretty magical experience.” They’ve since made stops along the East Coast and down South and soon enough they’ll get a bit closer to home with West Coast dates including a stop at Soda Bar on July 25 with indie rock bands Hockey and Swimm.
“We love San Diego,” Jackson told me on the phone recently. “Every time we go down there, we have a great time. Made some really nice friends down there, seen some really great bands down there.”
After several tours, now equipped with a van with A/C (although seemingly not many more comforts), and an easy-going nature the foursome are, what Jackson jokingly calls, “efficient road warriors.”
“One pair of pants- that’s all you need,” Jackson cracked. “We call ’em ‘tour pants.’”
With many feats under their belts already, Saint Motel shows no signs of stopping. A splashy new single “Just My Type” is due out shortly, they have a song featured in the trailer for Boardwalk Empire’s fourth season, and when this tour wraps they’ll finish up their sophomore album. And hopefully wash their tour pants.
