LadyFest: 3 Days of Rockin’ Females: June 1-3

Adding to her awesomeness, Vanja James, not only wields her guitar with ease and belts out a range of tunes she’s also put together three epic days of music at Eleven. Along with the help of Tour Booker Annie, the two have brought together a wide range of talents, many from right here in San Diego and nearby L.A – these three days of awesomeness have been dubbed LadyFest. I’ve been following Vanja and Annie along in their journey and the fateful dates are now just a little over a week away. Prepare thyselves. The days are dedicated to bands that feature fierce females in any role- from hard-hitting drummers to bitchen bassists to singing songstresses – LadyFest has it all. See below for my quick rundown of set times, genres (I use that term loosely since the eclectic nature of these lady-bands is what makes them so appealing), and previews for a few of the acts. There’s a little something for everyone so check it out and come join us for a day, or two, or three. Only $6 cover per day and Eleven (map it here) features lots of tasty drinks including reasonably price craft brews. (Note: the schedule is being worked on and the lovely Vanja herself will be playing a set in here somewhere, keep up on Facebook.)

June 1 – Day 1 – 7pm Start Time – Facebook Event Page

International Dipshit – 7pm – Female/male duo on drums and guitar. For more: Connect.

Some Kind of Nightmare – 7:30pm – For more: Connect.

SXO – 8pm – Female/male duo that take stripped down guitars and drums and build layers with kick ass keyboards and synthesized sounds. Garage, alternative, rock, and then some. For more: Connect, follow, find, listen. I’m personally digging “Take Arms”.

Gone Baby Gone – 9pm – Female-fronted band that play good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll. For more: Connect, follow, listen. “Vicious” does it for me, and not just because of the name.

Bassline Bums – 10pm – Punk outfit on tour from Texas. For more: Find.

The Lumps – 11pm – Local punk band with frontwoman Melissa LaFara rocking a mean bass and some wicked vocals. For more: Connect, find.

Gloomsday – 12am – Female/male duo with a range of influences from garage and post-punk to experimental, noise-pop. Gloomsday features Justin Cota on baritone guitar and Lori Sokolowski on drums. For more: Connect, listen, watch, follow.

w/DJ Bearded Bearden between sets.

June 2 – Day 2 – Matinee Show – 4pm Doors Open – $6 Cover

Writer Prima – 5:30pm – An eclectic group fronted by a lovely lady- I hear tinges of folk, rock, blues and all anchored by smoky soulful vocals by Felisa Skibicki. For more: Connect, listen, watch, find. I like “Hurricane” best so far.

Erleen Nada – 6:15pm – Solo electronic music act described as psychedelic synth-heavy electro-space pop. City Beat called her song “Psychedelic Space Ship” one of the top 10 songs in the great demo review. And they are brutally honest, lemme tell you. This chick looks as interesting as she sounds. For more: Listen, follow, watch, find.

Little Red Lung – 7pm – Really cool vibe from this band, ethereal vocals and clear, powerful sound. Gives me that magical sense like Florence + The Machine. For more: Connect, listen, watch, follow, find. Pretty obsessed with “50 Fingers

2 Bit Radio – 7:45pm – An electronic band that puts on a great live show, complete with a light show. For more: Connect, listen, watch, follow, find.

AntiQuark – 8:30pm – Energetic electronica duo who experiments with a variety of other  genres. For more: Connect, listen, watch, find.

June 3 – Day 3 – Matinee Show – 4pm Start Time – Facebook Event Page

Kelsea Rae Little – 4:30pm – This young songstress offers whimsical meandering tunes full of rich tones including harp. For more: Connect, listen, watch, find.

5:15 – TBA – Whatever ends up here will kick ass. Trust me.

Mittens 6pm – Sort of “Indie-Pop” sprinkled with a wide variety of influences from The Crystals to The Cardigans. For more: Connect, listen.

Eliza Rickman – 6:45pm – Angelic voice on this one, the vibe is a little retro and quirky. Me likes. For more:  Connect, listen, watch, follow, find. “Black Rose” is a tantalizing tune for your ear drums.

LadyParts – 7:30pm – From what I can tell this is a raucous punk rock girl group. Get ready to rawk. For more: Connect, watch.

Tori & Sam – 8:15pm – Tori was described to me as having a “pretty smoky soft voice and nice acoustic vibe.” I’m in! For more: Watch, find.

About Jen Van Tieghem

There aren’t many things I love more than music. While life spins away at a rapid beat I’ve realized it’s important to spend it doing what I love – enjoying music in San Diego. I have a handful of favorite venues, a heart full of favorite bands, and decided to write about it.
