Saturday Song Obsession & Summation of Sound – 4/28/12

Some songs just get me on the first listen. My song obsession this week reeled me in like a big fat musically-obsessed fish right away. The voice first reminded me of Jack White and kept getting better from there, turns out it’s a fucking chick. Mind = blown. Jack White with tits, like I’m the only one with that fantasy. Come on.

“Hold On” by Alabama Shakes: This has all the makings of a perfect rock song. The guitar hook is just damn killer. The vocals grip you with a tenderness and then rise into wailing power. I have been rocking out to this for more than a week. It makes cleaning the house nearly tolerable. Sexy and soulful, what more could you want in one song?

Favorite Lyric:

“I got so much to do, I ain’t got much time.
So, must be someone up above saying “Come on girl! You got to get back up!”

Summation of Sounds:

Loved and Lost Again: A list of songs featuring the word “lost,” #11 just slays me.

Losing My Mind to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg at Coachella: My first guest writer, Ava Apollo of Be My Travel Muse gives a great review on an epic Coachella set.

Spoiler alert – a couple awesome interviews coming up, a preview for May, and if tonight’s show is as fantastical as I think it will be I’ll have to relive it in type very soon.

About Jen Van Tieghem

There aren’t many things I love more than music. While life spins away at a rapid beat I’ve realized it’s important to spend it doing what I love – enjoying music in San Diego. I have a handful of favorite venues, a heart full of favorite bands, and decided to write about it.
