Saturday Song Obsession & Summation of Sounds: 2/25/12

My intention was for this part of the site not to be so focused on San Diego music and to give me a chance to express my love of other bands…. oh well. Last week I was obsessed with “Dark Horse” by Dead Feather Moon and this week I’m onto another (and quite different) band from our fine city. I was certain this song by Get Back Loretta was my favorite by them but after seeing it performed live on Monday, I’m somehow even more in love with it.

“Girlface” by Get Back Loretta: Man, I am such a sap. It’s just SO sweet. A simple song, but still powerful. The sentiment is pure and unabashed and hopeful. Reminds me of all those silly nicknames you have for one another when you’re in the throes of the early stages of being in  love (yeah, I sorta remember how it goes.) GBL is a talented bunch and they are just as impressive with their soulful sweet side as they are when they rock. Ok, enough with the girliness. Sheesh, I’m gonna have to go chug a PBR to get my equilibrium back.

Favorite lyrics:

“I’ll never be tired, of sailing in life with you,

So I make my plan to love and adore you.”

Summation of Sounds

Gotta Believe: Get Back Loretta, Wendy Bailey and True Stories, & Vanja James at The Casbah: adorable opening artist with a tender voice followed by kick ass chick rock and a sweaty girl crush hug finished up by my song obsession going full tilt in person. Triple the fun and a romantic notion to celebrate. I danced until my legs hurt.

Back to San Diego: Gomez at Belly Up: A set of sensational songs- new and old followed by a top ten of San Diego’s Gomez favorites. My favorite band never disappoints. I danced until my face hurt.

About Jen Van Tieghem

There aren’t many things I love more than music. While life spins away at a rapid beat I’ve realized it’s important to spend it doing what I love – enjoying music in San Diego. I have a handful of favorite venues, a heart full of favorite bands, and decided to write about it.
