Saturday Song Obsession & Weekly Summation of Sounds: 1/28/12

Broken Social Scene is one of those bands I think I should like. Enough people have touted their awesomeness to me. People who I generally agree with or think are much cooler than me and therefore attempt to emulate in any way possible. But from what I’ve heard I just can’t get into the band. I have a similar feeling about Wilco, Ben Harper, and My Morning Jacket. Not being a whole-hearted fan of these bands makes me feel less than worthy as a music fan. My sincerest apologies and regrets.

BUT, this week I discovered a song by Broken Social Scene that I love. As soon as  I heard it (playing in the background of a website for some restaurant I’m not hip enough for) I grabbed my phone and proceeded to Shazam the shit out of that tune.

“Sweetest Kill” by Broken Social Scene: The vocals and soft melody have an ethereal quality that sucks me in deep. I’m entranced by the lingering, echoey lines of the song. It’s sweet and sexy at once and I am completely enamored. While I still can’t say I’m a fan of the band (despite my best efforts) I am a huge fan of this song. Huge.

Favorite Lyrics:

“And they can try to wear you down, put you out,
Get you through your will that won’t work.”

Summation of Sounds

I made it to two shows this week, but since one was just last night I only have one new review up. At least the subject was worthy – a great set by Grand Tarantula. And I also decided to bash on some fellow show-goers in a post about some epic annoyances. In case you missed either of my efforts, here they are my lovelies:

Five Show-Goers I Would Rather Not Dance Next To Again- in which I put people on blast who probably dislike me just as much.

Here We Go Again: Grand Tarantula at U-31- in which I further grow my lust for North Park, experience a new venue, and get vodka-soaked cocktails (for free!) whilst jamming to GT.

Here’s to good sounds, good spirits, and good swigs!

About Jen Van Tieghem

There aren’t many things I love more than music. While life spins away at a rapid beat I’ve realized it’s important to spend it doing what I love – enjoying music in San Diego. I have a handful of favorite venues, a heart full of favorite bands, and decided to write about it.
