There’s no lack of interesting stuff going on in San Diego this long Labor Day weekend (Fantasy Football draft anyone?) But if you’re thinking lively live music and getting outdoors for something with variety – the first ever SoCAL Music Festival on Saturday September 1 promises a hell of a lot of fun. With four stages, over twenty-five DJs and bands, and music acts still being added (local lovelies Transfer just got on the bill)- this one has me pumped and here’s just a few reasons why:
Cold War Kids: Last summer I got to enjoy CWK at Independence Jam in Oceanside, and I’m even more excited to see them this year as headliners of SoCAL Music Festival. I’ve become more familiar with their older stuff and I already know they can rock hard in a live setting. Sample the sound: “Audience“
Family Wagon: Good ol’ fashion rock ‘n’ roll is the first thing that comes to mind when I see and hear this band. They also put on enthusiastic live sets and have a new EP that’s worth a spin or ten. Note of caution: watch for those flying locks… looks like these boys could do some damage. Sample the sound: “Hard Times.“
Vokab Kompany: Energetic doesn’t begin to describe a Vokab live show. Are you sensing a trend here? The guys blend hip-hop and rock and even some electric violin. The vibe is fun and funky. Sample the sound: “So Bright.”
Terraplane Sun: This Venice, CA outfit brings in some essences of blues and folk with a slight country twang at times. Some songs are upbeat and catchy, others more subdued and thoughtful both work well. Powerful vocals anchor this band’s sound with a unique tone. Sample the sound: “Funnel of Love.”
There’s lots of other the music acts gracing the stages. Check here for more information on the lineups. The wide range of talent should offer something for any music fan. Plus there’s all kinds of other features to the day. I could not be less qualified to comment on the art and outdoor sport aspects of the festival… But I have to say any event that incorporates lots of different interests, brings cool people together and does it all in an awesome location is doing right in my book. SoCAL Music Festival takes place from 2pm to midnight and will span five blocks from 9th Avenue to Park Boulevard.
