In honor of the glorious changing of the season I had to pick a summer-referencing jam. Luckily one of my favorite San Diego bands, The Heavy Guilt released this gem just a month ago. Truth be told, I’ve gushed about the band a few times before. More on that here
Download here: “Summer Came” by The Heavy Guilt: This song is definitive of what makes this band great. While singer Erik Canzona’s vocals are striking, the musicians that anchor the sound of The Heavy Guilt layer on nuances that create a true rock and roll richness. Starting with a killer guitar lick and met with a solid drum beat the vocals come alive with Josh Rice’s keyboard and Al Howard’s percussion elements. Howard’s lyrics are smart and biting on this one. The magical marriage of his words with Canzona’s delivery are, as always, a solid blend. Sean Martin’s guitar prowess gets a showcase at 2 and half minutes in. Awesomeness. The song has long been a favorite of mine in THG’s live sets but it gets a whole new life with this stellar recording by the guys at The Lost Ark Studio. (Note: Follow them on Facebook for a new release each Thursday. So far they’ve offered tuneage from John Meeks, Nena Anderson, Old Tiger and more.)
